Just a Visit

We left on Friday to head to Illinois for a short visit with Mark, Lori and C-Bear.
While there, we did some decorating, landscape and maintenance jobs but mostly just enjoyed being together. The base OSC (Officer Spouse Club) sponsored an auction/trivia night so we all attended that and had a good time trying to outguess everyone there. Our table of 9 was decorated in the Nascar motif and was made up of 2 1/2 other couples (one husband was TDY) from Mark's squadron. Of the 20+ tables represented, we came out tying for 2nd place so we didn't embarrass ourselves horribly. Mark had to fly Sunday morning, so Lori, C-Bear, Deke and I met him at a Mexican restaurant after church. We started home around 2:00 and got back to IN just before dark.

The Big 89!

Saturday was Grandma Mary's 89th birthday. We celebrated by taking her to a wonderful restaurant downtown Lafayette, Bistro 501. The food was superb! Afterward, we went to Ken and Marian's house for cake and coffee. Max joined us there after having to conduct the band for the Purdue basketball game (they got trounced). Dianne was out of town and unable to join us. We had a great time and were happy we could be with Grandma Mary for her big day.

My Ship Has Come In

This past Tuesday, Lori swung by here on her way to Ft Wayne for an Ichthus meeting. She only stayed for a little bit but dropped off a precious cargo to stow for a couple of days- Miss C-Bear! It was so wonderful having a baby in the house again. We almost wrecked on the shoals Tue night, but it was smooth sailing for the rest of the journey. The two of them just left for their trip back home, and I hated to see them cast off. However, we've made a date to come see them the end of this month. So until then, I'll have to make do with snaps taken of the little miss.

Get me in my bed quick!

Now who are you again?

No way, Jose!

I think I just let a little toot!

Blind-But Now I See

Carmen and I at the work site

I gave my testimony last night. It wasn't just to my neighbor, my hairdresser, my Sunday school class or an interested seeker; it was before my church family. Each year during Lent, our Thursday night services are devoted to hearing the conversion stories of lay people. Each of 6 people is given a night to speak to tell the story of how he or she came to know the love of Jesus. This year, the committee who decides these things asked me to be one of the speakers. My original date to speak was March 18, but due to the cold feet of the senior pastor's wife, my date was switched to last night. It didn't leave me much time, having just 4 days to prepare. However, the story is familiar to me so there really wasn't much preparation other than producing a good outline and getting some slides and photos together so Deke could produce a powerpoint for me.

All that is kind of superfluous to the real meat of what I want to say. This morning I am feeling an overwhelming thankfulness to the Lord for what He has done in my life. When I was recounting the events that led me to accept Him and the incredible journey He has led me through since then, I am feeling like my heart might just burst wide open with love and gratitude.

The title of the testimony was, "Blind-But Now I See." Among many stories, I told the tale of my first encounter with God. I was on a short term mission trip to Puerto Rico (18 yrs old-senior in HS) with Dad and a group from the Lebanon District UM churches. I was walking by myself at dusk from our cabins on a path to the ocean when I lost one of my contact lenses. We're not talking the soft permeable things of today; these were actual prices of glass stuck in the eye! Frantically searching the sand for the lens, I finally gave up hope and went to ask Dad to bring a flashlight to help me search. Stupidly, I didn't mark the spot. Our interpreter, Carmen, grabbed my hands and said something like, "That's no big deal to God. Let's pray that He will help you find it." Weird. I didn't know a thing about praying and felt very awkward, but she prayed and that was that. Dad and I searched to no avail. What am I going to do now? Two thousand miles from home and no way to replace the lens. Blind. That night I awakened to listen to a terrible tropical storm. Lightning and thunder crashed overhead and the wind was horrific. Great, I thought. If there was ever a chance of finding that lens, all hope is gone now.

The next morning just after daylight, I walked down the path giving the search one last hurrah, when I was stopped cold by a squiggle line that ran right across the path. It looked something like a cartoon snake trail. It was totally out of place because the path had been scoured clean by the storm. I got down on all fours and followed the line to the right- no lens. I followed the line to the left- there at the exact end of the line in the sand was my lens! I screamed and yelled and woke everybody in the camp. Carmen wasn't surprised in the least. I was overwhelmed. After my initial excitement had worn down, I walked back down the path to the spot and fell on my knees thanking God for this miracle. Incredibly, it would be 5 years before I came to know this One who drew the line in the sand.

When I think back on all the ways he drew me to Him, I am so grateful that He kept at it. He truly is the "hound of heaven." I was blind all right; but my blindness had more to do with the things of the Spirit than the physical blindness of my eye. Five years later, Jesus would open my eyes totally and I would "see" Him in all His glory.

Hoary Frost

After Deke left for work, I went outside to try to capture the beauty of the morning. There was a magical feeling in the air, much like the atmosphere surrounding the ice-encrusted palace of "Dr Zhivago" when the Dr and Laura came upon his boyhood home in the dead of a Siberian winter. There was a hoary frost attached to everything, making it an icy wonderland. Even the air was noticeably crisp and snappy cold. Hopefully these pictures will capture just a fraction of the magic I experienced this morning.

Erin, wish I had your camera to get the macro shot needed to justify this scene

The following is an edited excerpt:

A half hour after I posted the above blog, I walked to the mailbox (without my digital) and had to run back to get this next shot before the frost completely disappeared. It's about 10 minutes too late but still might capture the awe I felt when I saw it.

Canopy of Snow

Saturday was Mom's hair appointment and as we returned from Flora, I couldn't resist taking this picture of Deke and Mom (notice Deke's barely-tolerant pose). Just outside the Asst Living entrance is a lovely ornamental tree that overhangs the walk. That morning it was covered with fresh, very sticky snow. It made a perfectly lovely frame for a winter picture. It was beautiful!

Today we have more snow which canceled schools (and churches) in the whole of northern IN. Deke and I are going on an adventure in the Jeep-breakfast at our favorite eatery in Delphi. Adios!!

Subbing

This past week, I substituted for the receptionist in our church office while the regular lady vacationed in Hawaii. We aren't even discussing the vacationing in Hawaii part.

Anyway, it was a busy week juggling the phones and keeping the front office in order. Friday the big snowstorm hit and created a wonderland here in the Midwest. On our way home from work we marveled at the beautiful scenery along the country roads. So we've included some pics of work and play for you to enjoy.
